Want cheaper power bills?
It's all about timing.

When is the cheapest time to consumer electricity?

Smart meters and time of use tariffs can provide cheaper electricity rates during off-peak periods. These tariffs are best for those who use most of their electricity during the day or very late at night.

Off-peak times vary by location (distribution zones and even states) so you’ll need to check your peak and off-peak times. If you are on a single rate tariff, your electricity rate remains the same regardless of when you use it.

To benefit from off-peak rates, you need a smart meter and a time of use tariff from your electricity retailer. Switching to such a tariff is possible if your retailer offers it and you have a smart meter. Smart meter installation costs may be covered in some cases by the retailer or government.

How much you save with time-of-use plans really depends on how much you can shift your electricity use to the cheaper times of the day or the weekend.

Here are some easy ways to save with time-of-use plans:

  • Electric Vehicle: Charge overnight or on weekends.
  • Dishwasher, Dryer, Washing Machine: Load them and use the delay function or run them before bed.
  • Hot-Water Cylinders, Spa Pools, Swimming Pools: Use timers to operate them during cheaper times.
