Ways to save energy

Here's our top tips on how to save power, save money and help the environment:

Consider a time-of-use power plan
If you have a flat-rate power plan, the price you pay for power doesn’t change throughout the day. Depending on your lifestyle and circumstance, a time-of-use power plan could be a better option.

Change your lightbulbs to LEDs
LED bulbs save energy and money compared to incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs waste most energy as heat, while LEDs use significantly less power to produce the same brightness and last longer, making early replacement cost-effective despite a higher initial price.

Invest in a heat pump
Heating our homes with electricity using resistive heaters (fan heaters, bar heaters, oil heaters) is very energy intensive and expensive. Using a a heat pump instead is a highly efficient way to heat your home. It outputs more heat energy than it consumes in electricity:

Proper home insulation is crucial for retaining heat and reducing power bills.
Maximize heat retention and prevent moisture in older homes by ensuring floor-length curtains, investing in wall insulation, and installing thermally broken, non-conductive double glazing. Thermally broken uPVC frames are ideal for minimizing heat loss and condensation.

Avoid drying your clothes inside
Drying clothes indoors adds up to five litres of moisture, increasing energy needed for heating. It may be more cost-effective to use a dryer briefly.

Ensure your appliances are energy efficient
Replace old, inefficient appliances with Energy Star-rated models for long-term energy cost savings. This is more economical than maintaining older appliances.

Get a home energy assessment
A home energy assessment will check your home's insulation and provide you with advice on how to make your home warmer, healthier and more energy-efficient.
